ABRAHAM’S BOSOM – LUKE 16.19-31
This study supplements the previous blog on heaven

The Rich Man and Lazarus

Based on an original study by J. Preston Eby

19 “There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day. 20 But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate, 21 desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

24 “Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented. 26 And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’

27 “Then he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house, 28 for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’ 29 Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ 30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31 But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.”

The story of the rich man and Lazarus is one of the most misunderstood stories in the Bible. In order to correctly understand it we must understand our Hebrew foundation and to whom Yeshua was speaking when he told this parable.

Yeshua continually spoke in parables to the Jewish people of his day. A parable is an analogy—a short allegorical story designed to convey a truth or moral lesson: Random House College Dictionary—which could even be a fable, so long as it is told to illustrate essential points of truth. Allegory: a representation of an abstract or spiritual meaning through concrete or material forms; figurative treatment of one subject under the guise of another: Random House College Dictionary.

Yeshua was not speaking about heaven or hell—he was speaking in condemnation to the leadership of the nation. Yeshua spoke in parables “because it is given unto you (disciples) to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given”, Matt 13.10-11

The rich man represents the Jewish nation, and the hypocritical Pharisees, scribes, and doctors of the law, which at that time enjoyed the favor and blessing of God above all nations of the earth. They are clothed in purple (royalty) and linen (righteousness) as they are called to be a nation of kings and priests.

Lazarus represents the people lying at Judah’s gate who were recipients of none of the blessings so lavishly bestowed upon the Jewish nation. He represents the Gentile nations—dog’s in the eyes of the Pharisees and Sadducees. The Gentiles were “alien from the commonwealth of Israel, a foreigner from the covenants of promise, without Christ, having no hope, and without God in the world.” Ephesians 2.12

This parable is really prophesying about the incredible changing of places between the Jews and the Gentiles! The rich man will be estranged and impoverished while Lazarus is promoted to “Abraham’s bosom”—the place of honor, blessing, and close personal relationship to God.

Think about this for a minute—if this is truly describing heaven and hell then heaven is no place of peace and joy. We see a gulf between the two—both those in heaven and those in hell can see and talk to each other. If you are a mother or father of someone in hell and you see them suffering everyday how can that be heaven? Could anyone enjoy the bliss of heaven when they see their loved ones across the gulf suffering in torment every day? This is a parable. This is not describing heaven and hell—it is about Yeshua being rejected by his own and the grace being given to the Gentile nations!

“Abraham’s bosom” is a place of favor. The Pharisees, when rejecting Yeshua’s claims of Messiahship said, “Abraham is our father.” Yeshua replied, “If Abraham was your father you would know who I was.”

The Jewish people had received the covenants, the promises, the elaborate temple and sacrificial system, the holy law, and blessings of Yahweh. They were blessed among all nations and were to be a light to the nations. They had become sectarian and despisers of all other nations. They wouldn’t even enter a Gentle’s house (Acts 10.28). They were self-righteous, hypocritical, and burdened the people with legalism. Yeshua was telling them that their place of favor in “Abraham’s bosom” was coming to an end.

In this parable the rich man asks Abraham to send Lazarus to his five brethren that he would testify to them. Who are these five brethren? The leadership of Yeshua’s time was the house of Judah—the Jews in our current world. Judah was Leah’s son and he had five other brothers from the same mother; Rueben, Simeon, Levi, Issachar, and Zebulun. These were their blood brothers. The leadership of the day knew exactly what Yeshua was talking about. They were very conscious of their past generations and history.

The book of 1 Chronicles 1 - 9 painstakingly lists the genealogies of the Jewish people. The books of Ezra and Nehemiah also have long genealogies of those who are “Jewish”. Yeshua was explicitly telling them they were going to lose their position of favor by rejecting Him.

This parable has nothing to do with what heaven and hell are—it is about Yeshua being rejected by His own and the grace that would be extended to the Gentiles. The Biblical number of grace is five—the five brethren represent this grace now being given to the Gentile nations.

At the end of this current age the Jewish people will cry out, “Hosanna (save us), blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord,” and they will once again be grafted back into the olive tree and restored to the place of favor—“Abraham’s bosom.” Ref: Zechariah 12-14.

When we carefully read Yeshua’s parables we see he is speaking to the Jewish nation and warning them not to reject Him. We have forgotten the Hebrew roots of our faith and have been interpreting these parables in a Greco-Roman mind set of understanding rather than in the original Hebraic understanding.

We have been grafted into Israel due to their disobedience. We have not replaced them. The time of the Gentiles is coming to a close and the two houses of Judah and Ephraim are going to be reunited. It will be a glorious day when the two become one new man—Jew and Gentile together in Yeshua!

Yeshua came to save Israel. His ministry was focused on the Jewish people. It was only after his resurrection that the Gentiles were included. Yeshua reluctantly healed Gentiles during his ministry—He was sent to the lost sheep of Israel. The commission to go to all nations came after his resurrection. Below are additional scriptures to corroborate this and to give further depth to the above parable:

Matt 15.22-28, Mark 7.24-30, Ephesians 2.11-22, John 4.1-26, Genesis 22.8

A STUDY ON HEAVEN AND WHAT HEAVEN IS
Those who research this blog will view this as continuing commentary on where we go after we die.

Strong’s 8064 = samayim = region above the earth: the heavens, place of the stars, sky, air, heaven: invisible realm of God. Region = space or body, entirety of a space or area

Strong’s 8064 = s’mayim = the heavens of this world, sky, air. Heaven, realm of God. Heaven is a euphemism for “God”.

Heaven and earth combine into one – the totality of all that exists = the universe

Realm = a royal domain, kingdom

In the Old Testament the word for heaven is overwhelmingly Strong’s 8064 = samayim. A few references are 8065 s’mayim. Both basically mean the same thing.

The Bible speaks of the “Kingdom of God” or “Kingdom of Heaven” in the New Testament. What is the Kingdom of Heaven? The Kingdom of Heaven is the coming millennial reign of Yeshua and His saints in the Millennial Kingdom (MK) as described in Revelation 20. Heaven is not a place we go when we die. (Review study on death and resurrection.)

The following verses are a representation of all the references to heaven in the Bible. There are many more verses but they all are like the ones printed here. Heaven is God’s throne and place of government. It is not a place we go when we die. At death, we await to hear the voice of our Lord, resurrect from the dead, receive a new immortal body, and enter into the MK where we rule and reign with the Lord.

OUR FOCUS IS TO ALLOW THE BIBLE TO INTERPRET ITSELF AND REVEAL THE TRUTH

Old Testament:

Genesis 24:7  The Lord God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my family, and who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, ‘To your descendants[a] I give this land,’ He will send His angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there.

Genesis 28:12, 16 12 Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 16 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.17 And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven!”

Genesis 49:25 By the God of your father who will help you, and by the Almighty who will bless you With blessings of heaven above….

Exodus 20:4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;

Exodus 20.22 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘You have seen that I have talked with you from heaven.

Exodus 24:10 and they saw the God of Israel. And there was under His feet as it were a paved work of sapphire stone, and it was like the very heavens in its clarity.

Deuteronomy 4:11 “Then you came near and stood at the foot of the mountain, and the mountain burned with fire to the midst of heaven, with darkness, cloud, and thick darkness.

Deuteronomy 4:36 Out of heaven He let you hear His voice, that He might instruct you; on earth He showed you His great fire, and you heard His words out of the midst of the fire.

Deuteronomy 4:39 Therefore know this day, and consider it in your heart, that the Lord Himself is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other.

Deuteronomy 9:14 Let Me alone, that I may destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven; and I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they.’

Deuteronomy 10:14 Indeed heaven and the highest heavens belong to the Lord your God, also the earth with all that is in it.

Deuteronomy 30:19 I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live;

Joshua 2:11 And as soon as we heard these things, our hearts melted; neither did there remain any more courage in anyone because of you, for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.

Then Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here, please, for the Lord has sent me on to Bethel.” 10 So he said, “You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so.11 Then it happened, as they continued on and talked, that suddenly a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and separated the two of them; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. Note: Later the sons of the prophets ask Elisha for permission to look for Elijah 2 Kings 2.16-18. Later, after this event, Elijah writes a letter to the king (2 Chronicles 21.12). Elijah was taken up into the heavens and was relocated to another area.

2 Kings 17:16  So they left all the commandments of the Lord their God, made for themselves a molded image and two calves, made a wooden image and worshiped all the host of heaven, and served Baal.

Summary: We see heaven as Yahweh’s throne, place of government, judgment, withholding, secrets, armies of the Lord or Hosts, an unmeasurable place or expanse, where Yahweh hears us and our prayers, where angels reside and Lucifer was cast out of, where records are kept and your name can be blotted out, from where we hear His voice!

New Testament:

All N.T. references are Strong’s 3772 Greek = sky, air, firmament, any area above earth, the place of sun, moon, stars; heaven, in which God dwells, the third heaven (2 Corinthians 12:2)  being the area of God’s dwelling, in some places a euphemism for “God”, such as,  Kingdom of God (Heaven).

Euphemism; noun

1.

the substitution of a mild, indirect, or vague expression for one thought to be offensive, harsh, or blunt.

2.

the expression so substituted: “To pass away” is a euphemism for “to die.”.

Matthew 28:2 And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it.

Luke 10:20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather[a] rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”

Luke 18:22 So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

Luke 23:43 And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.” Strong’s paradise = 3857, used in 2 Corinthians 12.4, and Rev 2.7 – Base meaning = of a garden, a place of blessedness. In Jewish thought = Gan Eden, the garden = the Millennial Kingdom to come; MK O.T. Eden = Strong’s 5731 = paradise, delight, the world to come.

John 3:13 No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven! Ref: Acts 2.42-36

Romans 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,

Romans 10:6-7 But the righteousness of faith speaks in this way, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?” (that is, to bring Christ down from above) or, “‘Who will descend into the abyss? Grave” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead (resurrection).

2 Corinthians 5:2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, (our resurrected immortal bodies, 1 Cor 15).

2 Corinthians 12:2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago—whether in the body I do not know, or whether out of the body I do not know, God knows—such a one was caught up to the third heaven.

1 Thessalonians 4:16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.

2 Thessalonians 1:7 and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels,

Hebrews 9:24 For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us.

Hebrews 10:34 for you had compassion on me[a] in my chains, and joyfully accepted the plundering of your goods, knowing that you have a better and an enduring possession for yourselves in heaven.

1 John 5:7 For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one.

Summary: We have a Master in Heaven, no man has ascended into heaven, our inheritance or possession is recorded in heaven, the Lord will appear from heaven with His angels, our conversation should “be on heavenly things”, God will be revealed from heaven, not everyone will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven (MK).

Bosom of Abraham: A figure of speech for the life hearafter. According to the Old Testament, when a person died he went to “be with his fathers” (Gen 15.15; 47.30; Deut 31.16). The patriarch, Abraham was regarded as the “father” of the Jews (Luke 3.8). At death, therefore, the Jew went to his forefathers, or, more specifically, to join “father Abraham.”

The only use in the Bible of “Abraham’s bosom” occurs in Jesus’ parable of the rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16.19-31), in which the beggar is described as being “carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom.” Nelson’s New Illustrated Bible Dictionary.

Abraham’s Bosom is a euphemism for the place of honor. Soon, the poor man (the Gentiles) would be supplanting the rich man (Jews) as the receivers of the Gospel. The Gentiles would be in “the place of honor” represented by Abraham’s bosom. This parable was not about heaven as a place people go to when they die.

There are more scriptures then these about heaven, but they all repeat what the ones above say. Read this study prayerfully and ask for God’s understanding. When we die we go asleep in the grave, we await the voice of Yeshua, rise up from the dead, receive a new immortal body, and rule and reign with Him in the Millennial Kingdom (MK).

This is the first resurrection. After the 1000 year reign the rest of humanity which has died will rise from the dead and the “White Throne” judgment will occur. This is called the second death. Those who are judged are thrown into the Lake of Fire or Hell at that time (Read Revelation 20).

FOLLOW UP ON HOLLYWOOD SCANDAL FROM THE TRUMPET
You can receive updates by subscribing to the link above. This organization follows world events with a Biblical World View.

One of entertainment’s most powerful men, Harvey Weinstein, stands exposed as a serial womanizer and a brazen pervert, a fitting symbol of a corrupt industry. In not-unrelated news, a few weeks ago pornographer Hugh Hefner died, and was widely eulogized as a cultural revolutionary, a valiant conqueror of sexual repression.

These regrettable headlines reveal the sick state of American morality.

Few would acknowledge it, but there is a link between these episodes and the spate of curses besieging America lately: hurricanes, wildfires, mass shootings, political chaos, social fragmentation and so on. These are far more directly the cause for such effects than are global warming, inadequate gun control, or systemic racism.

Weinstein had been at his gross escapades for decades. He targeted dozens of women. Many acquiesced to his salacious demands, and many more to his threats to keep quiet, fearing harm to their careers.

Everyone is piling on Mr. Weinstein. Suddenly, everyone is appalled. Politicians who accepted millions of his dollars are acting disgusted and shocked. But Weinstein’s behavior was no secret. Everyone knew. Employees around him helped; untold numbers—including his political connections—looked the other way. His sins were condoned and nurtured within the fetid incubator that is America’s entertainment industry. He thrived within a vast system of complicity.

Pretending like Weinstein was an anomaly in Hollywood is as phony as a Styrofoam movie prop. Weinstein was abetted by a “casting-couch culture” that has pervaded his industry from its earliest days.

Scripture condemns not only the thief, but also the person who consents with him—not only the adulterer, but also the one who keeps company with him (Psalm 50:18).

Nobody can be genuinely shocked at this man’s amorality. Hollywood glamorizes amorality. That this powerful producer—whose movies have made billions of dollars and garnered dozens of prestigious film awards—could commit these sexual crimes for so long highlights the nature of the people he mixed with and the product he peddled. Over and again this kind of private vice is made public, scripted, acted, filmed, polished, distributed, projected, broadcast and streamed worldwide. How can society suddenly condemn his actions (which are justifiably condemnable), yet not recognize the problem with the films that disseminate this culture far and wide? How is a secluded solicitation worse than one that is recorded and circulated? It is ridiculous to believe society can freely enjoy the latter without having to deal with the former as an ugly consequence.

Jesus Christ told us to judge by fruits, and the revelations about Harvey Weinstein are fruits by which the industry must be judged.

Since the truths about Weinstein have emerged, others have denounced him—only to be subsequently exposed for similar sins of their own. More and more women are emerging with accusations against more and more actors and industry leaders. One former child star insists that sexual harassment of women in Hollywood is secondary to the greater problem of sexual harassment of children. His explosive charge was backed up by the 2015 documentary An Open Secret, which exposed the “pedophilia epidemic” in entertainment.

These are people with enormous social influence. These are people Americans subsidize and idolize. They shape society’s attitudes, guide its standards and mores, animate its dreams.

God calls America “an hypocritical nation” for good reason (Isaiah 10:6). Hollywood culture is epically hypocritical. It masquerades as feminist and pro-women, while it treats women as sex objects—both in parlors at private parties and in the cinema reels purposefully intended to arouse lust. It is anti-gun in the political arena but ceaselessly romanticizes gun violence on the silver screen. Its moral standards are as fake as its movie sets. Perhaps this shouldn’t shock us in an industry whose business is playacting, whose product is image.

A lot of people are getting a self-righteous charge out of condemning one movie producer right now. The Motion Picture Academy booted him and said, “[T]he era of willful ignorance and shameful complicity in sexually predatory behavior and workplace harassment in our industry is over.” We’ll see. But don’t expect the product to change.

Romans 1 condemns those who, rejecting God, take on a reprobate mind and become filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, maliciousness, deceit and malignity. But God doesn’t just condemn those who commit such things—He also condemns “those who have pleasure in them that do them.” That’s a whole lot of people in America today.

Can we then turn around and expect only blessings? “How shall I pardon thee for this?” God asks through one of His prophets (Jeremiah 5:7-9). “[T]hy children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots’ houses. They were as fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbour’s wife. Shall I not visit for these things? saith the Lord: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?”
