WITCHCRAFT NOTES AND VERSES

Old Testament =

Strong’s 7081 = divination: pagan practice of determining the future by examining the position of stars. Communication with the dead or spirits, examination of animal organs for guidance.

1 Samuel 15.23 = For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, He also has rejected you from being king.”

Strong’s 3784 = to engage in witchcraft, be a sorcerer.

2 Chronicles 33.6 = Also he caused his sons to pass through the fire in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom; he practiced soothsaying, used witchcraft and sorcery, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger.

Strong’s 3785 = witchcraft, sorcery with the meaning of rebellion or seduction into false religion.

2 King’s 9.22 = Now it happened, when Joram saw Jehu, that he said, “Is it peace, Jehu?” So he answered, “What peace, as long as the harlotries of your mother Jezebel and her witchcraft are so many?”

Micah 5.12 = I will cut off sorceries from your hand, and you shall have no soothsayers.

Nahum 3.4 = Because of the multitude of harlotries of the seductive harlot, The mistress of sorceries, who sells nations through her harlotries, and families through her sorceries.

Deuteronomy 18.10-11 = There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer,  or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead.

Isaiah 44:25 = (God) Who frustrates the signs of the babblers, and drives diviners mad; Who turns wise men backward, and makes their knowledge foolishness;

Jeremiah 27:9 = Therefore do not listen to your prophets, your diviners, your dreamers, your soothsayers, or your sorcerers, who speak to you, saying, “You shall not serve the king of Babylon.”

Jeremiah 29:8 = For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not let your prophets and your diviners who are in your midst deceive you, nor listen to your dreams which you cause to be dreamed.

Ezekiel 21:21-23 = For the king of Babylon stands at the parting of the road, at the fork of the two roads, to use divination: he shakes the arrows, he consults the images, he looks at the liver.  In his right hand is the divination for Jerusalem: to set up battering rams, to call for a slaughter, to lift the voice with shouting, to set battering rams against the gates, to heap up a siege mound, and to build a wall.  And it will be to them like a false divination in the eyes of those who have sworn oaths with them; but he will bring their iniquity to remembrance, that they may be taken.

The word of God forbids:

Soothsaying – Observing of times, Deut 18.10; Interpreting omens, Num 23.23, 24.1; Sorcery, Deut 18.10-11; Conjuring spells, Ps 58.5, Isaiah 47.9; 19.3; Consulting Mediums, 1 Sam 28.3-9, Isaiah 8.19, 29.4; Spiritism (appears with witchcraft), Hebrew = to know; Calling up the dead = necromancy, Deut 18.11

The word magic appears in the O.T. in three places: Joseph in Egypt, Gen 41.8-24, Moshe in Egypt, Exodus 7.11-9.11, 4.7-9, 5.4; Daniel in Babylon, Dan 1.2. 2.2-27, 4.7-9, 5.11…the ineffectiveness of the magicians is underscored in the Bible.

Simon the sorcerer from the Greek word magic Acts 8.9-28…also ref: Acts 13.6-8, Acts 19.3
