Part 3 - A Tour of the Federal Triangle in Washington D.C.
Star lore in astrology and astronomy were important to those in secret societies in the 18th and 19th Centuries when the capitol city of Washington D.C. was designed and built. Members of the Masonic Craft were the designers and builders of the city. The following is information from: “The secret Architecture of our Nation’s Capital” by David Ovason.
The design is based on the arcane secret wisdom of Masonry which is based on Egyptian, Greek, and Roman, pagan beliefs. The Masonic square or triangle is incorporated into the design and layout of streets in the city. The following is a guide to walking the city and discovering these hidden secrets.
A triangle of three stars is linked with the White House, Capitol Building, and Washington Monument. Three major stars form this triangle with the Zodiac of Virgo within it. The triangle represents the Masonic square and contains many Masonic mysteries and wisdom.
Virgo is the patron goddess of the designers of Washington DC. The stars of the triangle are Arcturus, Spica, and Regulus. Arcturus falls on the White House, Regulus falls on the Capitol, and Spica on the Washington Monument when overlaid on the city map.
Within this large triangle is a smaller triangle that runs on Pennsylvania Avenue on the north and Constitution Avenue on the south. The east boundary is 3rd Street and the western boundary is 15th street if you are walking the triangle. This smaller triangle is called the “Federal Triangle.”
The Federal Triangle – pg. 253 ff - There are ten government buildings within this triangle with hidden Masonic and astrological information within the design of these buildings. Their cornerstones would have been laid in connection with the position of certain planets and stars in the Zodiac which would empower each building. Statuary and zodiacs are placed within and without these buildings. Only those initiated into the Masonic Craft would understand the meanings of these designs. The triangle is tied to the heavens above and the earth below.
The Federal Triangle Buildings:
Mellon Fountain Zodiac – In front of the National Gallery, Pgs. 281-87; Plate 15 - Commissioned in 1947 as a memorial to Andrew W. Mellon, one of the richest and most influential Masons of the first half of the 20th Century. Water overflows to a ground level bowl on which the 12 signs of the Zodiac are carved with considerable insight and feeling.
The zodiac signs are oriented so that it receives the first rays of sunlight on March 21, which marks the vernal equinox. This light is now blocked by the US Courthouse building.
The secret design in the fountain: Draw an imaginary diameter across the bowl with the zodiacs, the line follows the orientation of Pennsylvania Avenue. The vernal orientation is designed to run down Constitution Venue. In this secret design the fountain bowl becomes the fulcrum for the two massive groups of zodiacs of the larger triangle containing the White House, Capitol, and Washington Monument—the Dirksen Building on the east and the National Academy of Sciences to the west.
Federal Trade Commission – Pgs. 286-87 – This building was conceived from the very beginning as the eastern tip of the Federal Triangle. It was often called the Apex Building before its official function was decided. Virgoan influence is seen in this building. Above the eastern doorway, overlooking Constitution Ave, is a striking image of a woman holding a large sheaf of corn (figure 30.)
National Archives – Pgs. 288-91 – The construction of this building is saturated with Vigoan impulse. Ground was broken on the morning of Sept. 9, 1931, when no fewer than four planets were in the sign Virgo— the Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Neptune. The cornerstone was laid by President Hoover on Feb. 20, 1933. Three planets and a nodal point were in Virgo—Mars, Jupiter, Neptune, and the dragon’s tail.

On the low terrace looking on Constitution Ave is a bare breasted woman cradling a sheaf of corn in her right arm and supporting against the corn a young child. This represents the celestial Virgin, who bears so many names throughout history—from Isis with her son Horus to the Virgin Mary with Child.
Corn, wine, and oil are presented as offerings at Masonic cornerstone ceremonies. This is why we see Virgo with corn throughout the city. Finally, this building has 72 columns surrounding it. This number has a sacred meaning in many mystery esoteric societies. The sun drops back against the Zodiac one degree every 72 years. A healthy heart circulates blood through the body beating about 72 times a minute. There is much more…the point is these buildings were not randomly designed!
Department of Justice – Pgs. 291-96 – This building was dedicated at 3 PM on October 25, 1934 in the presence of the Masonic President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Virgo was on the descendant with Mars and Neptune. Jupiter, the planet associated with justice, was conjunct with the Sun, in Scorpio.
Look at the lapidary panels on the outside of the building for esoteric meaning (fig 32). This one was designed to make a hermetic use of sunlight in the slow buildup toward an esoteric meaning. There are 5 figures on the lapidary. The sun will light them from left to right. The last figure has a spear in his hand…as the sun moves we see coiled around the spear is a serpent.
If you look closely it appears the spear may not be piercing the serpent. One interpretation is that this is the serpent of wisdom. Another says the snake is pinned to the earth—rather than a serpent of wisdom it represents the overcoming of our lower nature. Which is it?
If it is the serpent of wisdom that would represent the serpent of the Garden that deceived Eve. Is it this subtle serpent? Also look at the doors of the building to discover more Virgoan/Ceres themes with wheat and lions.
Internal Revenue Building – pgs. 302-03 - This building really has nothing of interest as it originally had an extensive sculptural program planned but discarded for financial reasons. The original plan called for destruction of the Old Post Office building. Congress wisely never gave approval for destruction of the Post Office.

Old Post Office Building – pg. 303 – This building is an Old Italian style building.
Federal Triangle Building – pgs. 296-302 – This immense structure houses United States Customs, Departmental Auditorium, and Interstate Commerce Commission. The central pediment above the portico has a bare-breasted figure of Columbia holding a torch—an attribute of the corn goddess Ceres. To her right, a nude woman clutches a sheaf of corn while resting on a bull (fig 34). Very much like Europe riding the bull! The woman on the beast!

On the Interstate Commerce Commission Building is an astrological symbol (fourth pediment from the right) a nude male, reclining upon swirling clouds holding a caduceus (staff) to show that he represents the god Mercury (air) (ruler of Virgo). The fifth pediment shows a naked woman riding a sea horse (water).
Ronald Reagan Building – The book by Ovason did not include this building. Still under study.
District Building – District of Columbia City Hall. Construction began 1904 and was completed in 1908.
Department of Commerce – pgs. 303 – 307 – Once called the “worst planned and least efficient modern building in the world,” by General Hugh Johnson, an early tenant. It was finished in 1931 at a cost of more than 17 million dollars!

President Herbert Hoover laid the cornerstone on July 10th 1929 not realizing the building would be named after him in the 1980’s. The date was well chosen as the moon and Mars were in Virgo. Hoover used the same Masonic trowel that George Washington used in the cornerstone laying of the Capitol in 1793.
Inside the cornerstone cavity were placed copies of important patents. Included were copies of the earlies recorded patent Issued to Francis Baily on Jan 29, 1791, and those for the telephone, telegraph, cotton gin, sewing machine, the reaper and the incandescent electric lamp.
There is not much visible symbolism seen on this building, however, it is linked to the stars. The western façade has a series of pediments which offer a distillation of the star wisdom we saw on the Interstate Commerce Building. Designed in 1934 they represent the four elements in a more modern way: The mining on represents earth, Fisheries represent water, Commerce represents fire, and Aeronautics represents air. These are expressions of the elemental nature which lies behind the zodiacal signs.
In its early years there was an observatory on the roof of the building. This building is the far west of the apex which began at the Mellon Fountain. The Mellon Fountain zodiac fixes the Federal Triangle to a fixed point on earth. In contrast the observatory that was on the roof of the Commerce Building was designed to sweep through all the stars in heaven, is a symbolic flourish.
If we imagine the Mellon zodiac at the sharp point of the triangle in the above illustration of the triangle and buildings, as being rooted in the earth we then see that the zodiacal power moves upward through the whole Federal Triangle. The symbolism links the earth (Mellon zodiac) with the heavens (Observatory).
Architectural Symbolism of the Federal Triangle
Architectural Symbolism of the Federal Triangle
The Federal Triangle sculptural program was undertaken during the period from 1930 – 1950. We see that in Masonic circles the old magic of Virgo from the 1790’s through 1920’s was still alive. After all, Washington D.C. is their Virgoan star city linked to this goddess.
The Federal Triangle reflects the larger triangle of the stars seen on the first page of this posting—linked to the White House, Capitol, and Washington Monuments—all Masonic structures. Virgo is emphasized throughout the city. She dominates throughout the iconography all over the city in her various disguises as Ceres, Isis, and so on.
If we look into a book on sacred iconography which was standard in the 18th Century we will find John Bell's “New Pantheon: Or, Historical Dictionary of the Gods, Demi-gods, Heroes, and Fabulous Personages of Antiquity”. In this book are epithets to a goddess named Myrionyma lifted by John Bell from a classical work by Apuleius a Latin-language prose writer, Platonist philosopher and rhetorician.
It is the Virgin Queen speaking: I am nature…mistress of the elements…It is I who govern the luminous firmament of the heaven, the salutary breezes of the sea…the Egyptians honor me with peculiar ceremonies, and call me by my true name Isis…I am Isis, Queen of Egypt, instructed by Mercury…I first invented the use of corn…I shine in the dog star. Ref: The secret Architecture of our Nation’s Capital. David Ovason, page 308.
Obviously the designers and builders of Washington D.C. were looking for the blessing of this pagan goddess.
Obviously the designers and builders of Washington D.C. were looking for the blessing of this pagan goddess.
Finally, the architects of the
Federal Triangle appear to, through their symbolism asking for the blessing of
the goddess Virgo. This is the esoteric nature of the geometric triangle
itself. They were constructing buildings which emphasized the four fold nature
of the material world.—fire, air, water, earth.
This merging is possible through the famous Euclidean theorem, in which the relationship between the triangle and square is demonstrated. Suffice it to say, this is part of the Masonic Craft—the triangle and the square.
The theorem of Euclid reverberates around the Federal Triangle serving to emphasize the sacred and spiritual nature of the triangle itself. The founders and designers knew exactly what they were doing. Washington DC is an astrological star city dedicated to Virgo.
Nest we will consider the Biblical prophetic ramifications of this pagan beginning of Washington, DC.
